When my first child was in her first year of life, I felt that I had to bathe her every day. Winter. Spring. Summer. Fall. I bathed her and washed her hair with what I was told, the best shampoo for babies out there. That was over five years ago and today there are an incredible amount of baby shampoos and a walk down the baby product isle can be overwhelming. Even with all of these options that claim to ‘keep your baby’s skin soft, smooth and healthy” and “clean without drying”. My question is, how often should a baby have their hair washed?

The other day I was getting my 2 year old dressed and I noticed that some of his hair resembled what looked like the beginning of a Dreadlock. I couldn’t help but wonder why certain people pay money to have their hair resemble matted coils of hair?
According to a heavily populated online resource wikipedia.com, dreadlocks are intentionally formed; because of the variety of different hair textures, various methods are used to encourage the formation of locks such as back-combing sections of the hair, Read More »

I was walking in Manhattan the other day and I kept seeing a certain hat upon the heads of both men and women. I continued along 14th Street and noticed that this same hat was displayed in store windows and amongst street vendors. I wasn’t even aware that this hat was a classic and had been around for quite some time. This straw hat is known as The Panama hat. I couldn’t help but wonder why this hat was named, The Panama, so the research began. Read More »

After the chill of winter has gone and all I have schlepped all of my winter hats down to the basement, all I want to do is have my head space expanded. However, that all changed once I found out about the affects sun has on our hair. Now, that hat wearing idea sounds so much better. What? Hair can get a sunburn? Now that I’ve got your attention….this is not possible since hair is not alive. Read More »

There was a time when I frequented the hair salon as much as twice a week. I was single at the time and I looked forward to a hair wash, scalp massage, and hair blow out. If you are not familiar with what a hair blow out is, you’ve probably saved yourself hundreds of dollars annually. Read More »

What I Learned About Hair From The Movies
Grease was my favorite movie when I was in grammar school. I could recite all of the lyrics to the songs and I even knew all the moves to “Greased Lightnin’”. Grease was not only a very fun musical about working-class kids in the late 1950s, it was also a movie about hair and how important it was to the kids at Rydell High School. Read More »

I must admit, the last time I had my hair cut I thought that the salon might have to call in a bulldozer to clean up the enormous amounts of hair below the chair. I saw that the women that had cut my hair-and survived the event-swept the hair away somewhere. Read More »

Blonde hair. Maybe you were born with it, or maybe you’ve hit the coloring solution to have flowing, blonde tresses. If hitting the bottle is not your thing, I don’t blame you. Hair chemicals can damage the scalp and make hair dry and brittle. I’ve never been blonde, but I have felt that my blonde friends have had some advantages over my jet black tresses. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was any scientific evidence to prove that “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds”. Read More »

Memorial Day weekend is known as one of the biggest movie debut weekends of the entire year. There is one movie in particular that has definitely put something in the “hair” tonight.
Look, hair it is. Sex and the City 2 may not have been number one at the box office, but the tweets, blog posts, and online articles about the hair styles from SATC2 have been beyond blockbuster. Does this mean that we will be running to our nearest hair salon with a photo of Sarah Jessica Parker off-screen or Carrie Bradshaw on-screen?

I don’t know about you, but as a teen I was in a constant battle with my hair. No matter what I tried at home, I couldn’t get rid of the frizzy-I’m really a curly girl-look. The only way my hair days would be good is if I had had my hair blown-out by a professional hair stylist the night before. The next day I would feel like a princess with my straight, silky hair, I could even run my fingers through it without them getting stuck in a serious hair ball. Read More »

If you find yourself suffering from hair loss, dry hair, flat limp hair, or a bad case of the greasies, the food you chew can be the reason. Hair quality has been less than “fair” due to our very “crash diet” driven culture and unlimited fast food fixes. If there are foods that deplete our hair of its “growth potential”, there must be foods that increase it as well. Fix your current hair situation with some of the below food remedies right from your own kitchen. Read More »

Do we really get more gray hair if one falls out or your friend picks it out? Well, I wanted to know about this myth and why some people welcome their gray hair and while others do sing the mantra “gray, gray, go away, don’t ever come back, okay” with gusto.
No matter how you find them, most of our gray hair is based on genetics. Some people start getting gray well before their fortieth birthday. What is one to do? Well, there is this product called hair-dye. It is not worth it to try and pluck those hairs because they’ll come back with friends. What causes those wiry strands to appear?

Being a teen with curly hair in the 1980s was not cool, at least, I did not think so. If you asked my mother and her friends about my curls, they would have told you how much money people would pay for those curls. Instead of accepting their praises, I did everything in my power to make my hair comply with the popular hair styles influenced by popular musical sensations in the 1980s; Pat Benatar, Banarama, Madonna, Boy George, and even Michael Jackson. In order to manipulate my strong genetic pool for thick curls, hair products were my weapons of mass hair deconstruction.

My five year old daughter never leaves home without her headband. Her favorite one is turquoise and made of plastic. She doesn’t quite understand the real purpose of this hair styling tool and at times does not fit all of her hair behind it. If I try to nudge her and put it on for her she will have not part of it. This led me to a fact finding mission about headband styles. Is a headband for keeping hair away from the face or is it just a style thing?
My conclusion is that the headband style depends on the person behind it, or in my daughter’s situation, not behind it. I would like to share the 5 insane but true things I learned about headbands during my fact finding mission.
