My five year old daughter never leaves home without her headband. Her favorite one is turquoise and made of plastic. She doesn’t quite understand the real purpose of this hair styling tool and at times does not fit all of her hair behind it. If I try to nudge her and put it on for her she will have not part of it. This led me to a fact finding mission about headband styles. Is a headband for keeping hair away from the face or is it just a style thing?
My conclusion is that the headband style depends on the person behind it, or in my daughter’s situation, not behind it. I would like to share the 5 insane but true things I learned about headbands during my fact finding mission.
Determine the difference between the types of products on the shelves. Most people know the basics (shampoo and conditioner), but you should also know what types of hair products are created to keep the hair style in place, including gels, mousse and hairspray, among others.
Step #2
Find your hair type. Do this on your own or with help from your stylist. Figure out if your hair is curly or straight, fine or coarse and oily or dry. This will determine what type of hair products you need to purchase.

STEP 1
Gather together all of your hair accessories. Using a gentle soap and a little water, wash off your hair clips and barrettes. The finish on many hair accessories can get dulled or ruined by hair products, especially hair spray, so it’s a good idea to regularly clean any residue off. For sensitive metals and ornate jeweled pieces, use jewelry cleaner for best results. Rinse and dry each piece thoroughly with a towel.
STEP 2
Separate pieces into different categories. For example, make piles of bobby pins, small barrettes, large barrettes, small clips and larger clips.
STEP 3
Clip together matching pairs within these categories. There’s nothing more frustrating in the morning than digging through a tangle of accessories trying to find that second barrette. Loop bobby pins together or lock the teeth of clips together. (See photo.) Now both pieces will always be found at the same time. See Tips section.
STEP 4
For delicate pieces that can be easily damaged or difficult to clean if they get dusty, try to retain the original packaging they came in, or buy small clear containers to keep them in. Clear containers help you see what’s inside while still protecting the contents. Read More »
